BATMAN vs ROBIN: MOVIE REVIEW OF DCU’s LATEST ANIMATED FEATURE!

image

In all honesty. I watched DCU’S latest Full Length Animated Film, “BATMAN vs ROBIN” at least, A month or so ago. Then all kinds of craziness came out all over the place. BvS, Avengers, Star Wars, Deadpool, and so on and so forth. So I am just now getting to writing this “Movie Review” So, without further delay.. Lets get to it.

SO…. Batman… VS….. Robin…… (SIGH) 0K!
Picking up a few months after “SON OF BATMAN” We find Robin (sans Batman) tracking down a lead on the whereabouts of some children that were kidnapped by the homicidal DOLLMAKER

(Voiced surprisingly, very creepily,by WEIRD AL YANKOVICH).

When Batman finally arrives, The Dollmaker escapes, with Robin in hot pursuit. In tracking down and apprehending DollMaker. Robin struggles to follow his instinct and training and kill him, but also preserve what his father has been teaching him about Justice. Deciding to let Dollmaker live. Robin is met by the mysterious Talon, who does kill Dollmaker and tells Robin, “To always trust your instincts” This chance encounter, mounting trust issues between him and his father and the rising threat of a long secret society known as The Court of Owls,

Sends Father and Son on a collision course. Which path will Robin choose? And Would Batman survive that choice?!

Short answer.. Yes! And so will I.

“BATMAN VS. ROBIN” the follow up to “Son of Batman” is.. A slight step up from the latter. But in all, it’s another huge step down from previous animated films from DCU. I personally found S.O.B to be a huge waste of time. BvR, was.. Tolerable. To say the least.

This strange direction that DCU is taking with its Animated Movies is so, Stupid! (In my opinion.) Each film is a follow up from the last one as an attempt to build a cohesive DCAU. But in doing so, they take bits and pieces of Solid story lines and puzzle them back together around a whole other story. It sucks!

The original DCAU, was a series of one shot films based on some of the best stories ever printed. BATMAN’s line of films had the best! From, YEAR ONE, to UNDER THE RED HOOD. I used to look forward to the latest release of an animated Justice League movie.. Not anymore.

BvR tried to further the story of Bruce and Damien’s relationship, while sprinkling a bastardized version of The Court Of Owls storyline.image

WHICH, BY ITSELF, WOULD HAVE MADE A MUCH BETTER MOVIE!!

The fight scenes were top notch. The voice acting, of course, is high class. Andrea Romano always makes magic when casting the right voices for the right characters. I’m still not completley sold with Jason O’Mara’s Batman. I did enjoy (SPOILER ALERT!!!) Kevin Conroy’s brief cameo as Thomas Wayne.

The Story is where it all falls apart for me. It would have been fine if they wanted to build upon the relationship between Bruce and Damien and still make it cool and fresh.. But DO NOT! Bastardiz THE COURT OF OWLS storyline. Which is by far, the greatest  Batman story line to date! I mean.. It’s up there along side Frank Miller’s stuff and Jeph Loeb’s LONG HALLOWEEN! (BTW DC when are we gonna get that animated film?! And PLEASE don’t fuck it up like you did  The Court of Owls!)

BATMAN VS. ROBIN is… Worth checking out. That’s as far as my recommendation goes. I hope DC ANIMATION  gets its act together and abandon this course of lack luster features that they have been producing. THRONE OF ATLANTIS and BATMAN VS ROBIN have been small steps up from a very deep hole that they are still in.. But it’s a start. So lets get back on track DC!
